How we tested

A few things stood out across every test. Almost all the tools can generate a single beautiful page; the gap between them shows up at page 8, page 9, page 12 — does it still look like your kid, or has it drifted into a different child? 2. ToonyStory — Best character consistency for hardcover gifts
ToonyStory is the strongest competitor in the category right now. They specialize in converting one photo into what they call a "movie-quality 3D character" that stays consistent across every page. In our test the consistency was excellent — arguably the best in the field for that specific 3D-rendered Pixar-ish look. If your kid loves Disney-style hardcovers and you don't mind paying for one, this is the tool to consider.

The illustrations are good, the writing is competent, and the pricing is per-book. If you're not sure AI books are worth the spend yet, Lullaby is a low-risk first test.
4. Magic Story — Best premium hardcover, slowest turnaround
Marketed as "Pixar-quality," Magic Story prints high-end hardcovers in the US and ships in 3–5 days. Quality is excellent and the hardcover is the nicest physical product we tested. The catch: the per-book price is the highest on this list, and the digital-first flow is slower than StoryStar, ToonyStory, or Lullaby.
5. DreamDraft — Most stylish design, 5-day wait
DreamDraft has the best-designed homepage in the category, and the books carry that aesthetic — they look like a designer drew them. The trade-off is a quoted 5-day turnaround, which is fine for a gift but slow for an impulse "bedtime tonight" book.
6. SkazkaAI — Longest book (48 pages)
If you want a chunky book — 48 illustrated pages instead of the typical 12 — SkazkaAI is the option. Useful for older readers or for a gift that feels weighty in the hand. Likeness is decent but not industry-leading.
7. Genie in a Book — Clean illustrations, basic editing
Genie in a Book ships clean, soft, watercolor-styled illustrations. Writing is fine. Editing tools are basic. It's a solid "safe" choice if the StoryStar / ToonyStory / Lullaby trio is sold out of your favorite plan.
8. CustomHeroes.ai — Photo-faithful but limited stories
CustomHeroes.ai is unusually photo-faithful — the illustrations stay close to the source photo, even in pose. The story library is narrower than competitors and editing options are limited.
9. StorybookAI.art — Cheapest one-off books, no subscription
